1. The Third Eye

The 'Third Eye' is the area between the eyebrows. Massaging the third eye helps reduce stress, eye strain, headaches and nasal congestion. This massage also helps relax the eye muscles and improve eye circulation. 
How to do it :
  • Place your ring finger between your eyebrows.
  • Gently massage in circular motions or just press.
  • Do this for 10 minutes.

2. Bridge Of The Nose

The bridge of the nose is the upper, bony part between your eyes, where the nose meets the forehead. Massaging this area helps relieve redness, stress, sinus pain and eye strain.
How to do it:
  • Place your thumbs on the bridge of your nose, near the inner corner of your eyes, under your eyebrows.
  • Close your eyes. Gently press on these points.

What Are the Trigger Points of The Eye?

Trigger points around the eye are hyperirritable spots in the muscles surrounding the eyes that can cause pain or discomfort when pressed. It's called a trigger point because it 'triggers' a painful response and is located in a tight band of muscle fibres. 

 

It not only affects the muscle where the trigger point is located but also causes 'referred pain' to distant and seemingly unrelated locations.  In the case of eye pain, trigger points are known to be located in at least eight muscles of the head and neck.

 

The main trigger points around the eye include:

  1. Orbicularis Oculi: This muscle surrounds the eye and helps close the eyelids. Trigger points here often cause eye pain, eye strain, and headaches, especially around the eyebrows or eyelids.
     
  2. Superior Oblique: Located near the bone around the upper part of the eye socket, trigger points in this muscle can cause pain or discomfort in the eye and can sometimes cause difficulty with eye movement.
     
  1. Suboccipital Muscles: Located at the base of the skull, trigger points can cause referred pain in the eyes, eye strain or headaches.
     
  1. Temporalis Muscle: Located on the side of the head, above the ears, trigger points in this muscle can radiate pain around the eyes, especially causing tension headaches.
     
  1. Masseter: The jaw muscle can also contribute to eye discomfort when trigger points are activated, often causing referred pain around the temples and eyes.

 

Expert’s Advice

As an expert, I would recommend massaging the eye acupressure point technique every day at home to see improvements. Each point should be massaged for approximately 20-30 seconds. Once you find the right pressure, apply it gently without causing pain. Additionally, practice deep breathing during the massage to help deliver oxygen to the eye cells, promoting healing.
