IBW is calculated using the following formula:

 

Men’s IBW = 50 + (0.91 × [height in centimeters − 152.4])

In the formula of Adjusted Body Weight, the correction factor (0.25) accounts for the fact that not all excess weight in obese people is fat. This correction factor helps provide a more accurate estimate of muscle mass and ensures the accuracy of nutritional and medical calculations.

Let's say we want to determine the nutritional needs of a man who is 180 centimetres tall and weighs 90 kilograms

 

His ABW90 kg

His IBW = 50 kg + (0.91 × [180 -152.4]) 

    = 50 + (0.91 × 27.6)

    = 50 + 25.1

    = 75.1 kg

 

Now, all we need to do is enter these numbers into the adjusted body weight formula:

 

AjBW = 75.1 kg + 0.25 × (90 kg - 75.1 kg) 

= 75.1 kg + 0.4 × 14.9  

= 75.1 kg + 3.725 

AjBW 78.8 kg
